New Art in Ballantyne Corporate Park
Monday, December 08, 2014

Ballantyne Corporate Park has expanded its art collection with the addition of three sculptures.

While attending an event at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, Smoky Bissell, chairman of The Bissell Companies, was impressed by the Zimsculpt exhibit, which included more than 100 handcrafted sculptures from Zimbabwe.

With the help of David Conlan, senior advisor to the Bissell organization, Mr. Bissell selected three pieces “Contemplation,” “Dancer” and “Startled Buck” that could thematically relate to areas of the Park. “Contemplation” is located in the courtyard between the Woodward and Gragg buildings, which were both named in honor of educators. “Dancer” resides near the Audubon Amphitheater, and “Startled Buck” can be found in the woods along the golf cart path that runs between The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge and the 18th hole of the golf course. “It makes for conversation,” Mr. Conlan said.

Expanding on the appeal of the art, Mr. Conlan added, “I think the most interesting thing about these pieces is that [they were made with] one piece of stone and no machinery, by hand, chiseling by hand. That’s just amazing when you see the pieces that they’ve done.”

According to Mr. Bissell, the company chose and installed the art with tenants and their experiences in the Park in mind. “We’re always thinking of tomorrow, and what we tried to do here in the Corporate Park is to put in enhancements that make your day better than it would have been had these pieces not been there.”

While tenant experience was the primary reason behind the addition of the sculptures, the art also has special significance to Bissell. The company partners with Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden to provide household memberships for every employee. “The art was procured locally, and because of our company’s relationship with Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, it has more of a connection to members of this company than anything we’ve ever had before,” Mr. Bissell said.

Mr. Bissell added, “We would certainly hope that we would be able to experience the reactions of those who see this new art. And I’d love for them to comment ‘In relationship to what is here, this is a plus’ or ‘Gosh, wouldn’t it be a neat idea if you considered something else’ because we’re just trying to make the daily experience better.”

The Charlotte Observer featured the addition of the sculptures in the South Charlotte News section of the Dec. 7 issue. Click here to view the article.

Endhaven Elementary Receives $25,000 from Ballantyne Corporate Park
Wednesday, December 03, 2014

In the spirit of the season, Bissell donated $25,000 to a deserving elementary school in 28277. Ballantyne Corporate Park’s Community Director Hailey Rorie reached out to the seven elementary schools in 28277 with an opportunity for them to share a pressing need that could be aided by this gift in 350 words or less. We received submissions from six out of the seven schools. We tasked a selection committee representing tenants in Ballantyne Corporate Park to review the applications and select a winner based on how fulfilling a school’s need would enhance the Ballantyne/greater Charlotte community. Endhaven Elementary was named the winner.

With the gift, Endhaven will update its playground equipment and help provide a safer environment for its students and local children. The funding will also enable the school to begin addressing drainage issues around its grounds, another area with unsafe conditions (due to erosion).

Principal Brian Slattery will share news of the gift at Endhaven’s PTA Holiday Concert on Thursday, December 4.

Thank you for being a part of Ballantyne Corporate Park! We strive to create a sense of community within our office setting, and we wanted to invest in the community in which we work. Together, we can make our area even stronger.

Read more about our local schools’ needs in the new issue of Ballantyne Magazine.
